New Tax Preparers May Want to Wait Until November 1 to Register with CTEC
New tax preparers may want to wait until November 1 to register with CTEC, to avoid having to take a continuing education course in addition to your "qualifying education" course of Pronto Tax Class. New preparer registration takes place throughout the year. Individuals who register as new preparers are issued a CTEC Certificate of Completion valid from the day they register through October 31st. CTEC's year runs from November 1st through October 31st of the following year.
Example: If you register as a new preparer on August 31, 2011, your registration will only be valid through October 31, 2011. To prepare taxes after October 31, 2011, you will be required to take 20-hours (12 federal, 4 state, 2 ethics and 2 either federal or state) of continuing education and renew your registration for the 2011/2012 cycle (November 1, 2011 through October 31, 2012). If you will not be preparing taxes between August 31, 2011 and October 31, 2011, you should wait until November 1, 2011 to register as a new preparer.
You should proceed with your registration as a new preparer now if you will be preparing taxes between today's date and October 31st of this year.
Also, remember that your 60-hour qualifying education course is only valid for 18 months from the completion date listed on your course completion certificate. If the 18 month time frame occurs before November 1st, you will be required to register as a new preparer.
If you have any questions regarding CTEC's registration cycle, please contact our office prior to registration.
