3 Tax Write Offs That You’d Never Think Of

 By: Jamie Waggoner

In this blog, you will learn about a few amazing tax write offs that most people would never think of!

This short list of unexpected tax deductions works great for anyone who might fall under these tax write off categories.

This short list is also a window into just how much flexibility and even creativity the IRS allows when it comes to tax deductions...many people are surprised.

Quitting Smoking

Sometimes it can be difficult to quit smoking so it is nice to know that certain expenses towards quitting can be written off on your taxes.

Expenses such as smoking cessation classes or the medical part of quitting, such as patches, may be written off as a medical expense.

Out of Pocket Charity Expenses

An example of specific out of pocket charity expenses could be the money spent for your child’s girl or boy scout trip.

If you are the leader of that trip, you can possibly write the expenses off for that trip.

Be careful though because you CANNOT deduct the time you spent on the trip, only the actual money you spent.  For instance, you couldn’t deduct the time you spent away from work which may have cost you a pay check.

Moving Expenses

A specific case towards writing off your moving expenses would be getting a job somewhere else.

If the job requires you to move 50 miles or more from your last job, then you can write off your moving expenses.

If you're surprised by some of these unexpected tax deductions, and would like to learn more about tax write offs, check out our Tax Deductions for Beginners course today--it's a good first step to developing a strong understanding of all the unusual ways you can save money on your taxes.
